History of Stewart Alexander & Company, Inc. and affiliates

The Company was formed in April 1983 by William D. Stewart and Van Alexander, formerly the chartering manager and assistant chartering manager of Chester, Blackburn and Roder, Inc., with Richard G. Sembler, formerly the operations manager of the shipping lines operated by Chester, Blackburn and Roder, as junior partner.

The Company has represented from the start both owners and charterers. Initially the emphasis was on charterers in the United States and Latin America, and owners here and in Europe. Recent years has also brought expansion into Asia . To fulfill the liner requirements of these clients and to provide full transportation service to many smaller clients, in 1991 Stewart Alexander became a licensed freight forwarder with the Federal Maritime Commission (FMC #3507). We are now one of the largest independent brokers in the United States, providing worldwide market coverage for our clients.

Stalco Forwarding Services, Inc., was formed in 1993 to take over the FMC forwarding license of Stewart Alexander, and assist the customers of Stewart Alexander  as well as outside customers.
